Asbab e Baghawat e Hind
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was a notable 19th-century Indian Muslim scholar and reformer, and one of his most influential works is "Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind" (The Causes of the Indian Revolt). The Indian Mutiny or Indian Rebellion of 1857, a great rebellion against British control in India, inspired the author to write this work.
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, in "Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind," attempted to present an unbiased and objective explanation for the uprising. He claimed that the Indian society's economic and social stagnation and lack of access to modern education were major contributors to the rebellion. He urged Indian Muslims to improve their lives by gaining the knowledge and training offered by modern institutions.
The historical research and social commentary in this work by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are regarded as groundbreaking in India. His educational and social reform work began with this event, culminating in 1875 with the founding of Aligarh Muslim University (then called Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College) at Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. The impact of this school in bringing Muslim education in India into the contemporary era cannot be overstated.
Historians and students of India's social and political history continue to consult "Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind" for insight into the uprising of 1857 and the state of the country at the turn of the twentieth century.
